Rocks fall into three main classes according to their formation: Sedimentary, Igneous, and Metamorphic. These three rock types are naturally occurring in our environment. However, it doesn't end there, as rocks can be classified further within these classes. Inside all of three major rock types, rocks can be classified by what's inside the rocks, where and how they formed. The classification code on the right can be applied to all of the rock types.
